The big freeze will undoubtedly catch up with us all in the New Year, and prevention in the home is 100% better than cure.
Leaks and floods from burst pipes are most common in winter due to freezing; the colder weather we've experienced in the last few years demonstrating the cost of dealing with the aftermath of a burst pipe in our homes.
Essentially burst water pipes occur in winter when the water inside a pipe freezes virtually anywhere in the home.
Ice expands putting pressure on the pipe, which eventually cracks, and when it bursts, thawed water will come pouring from the break.
The 'trap' underneath the basin or sink relies on the water seal as in the diagram to the left.
This is easily rectified - we are happy to inspect all traps in your property whilst completing any job, ensuring your traps remain clear, the waste water runs quickly and you don't have any nasty smells to deal with.
These valves have water running through them all their working lives, so they are prone to clogging up with scale and grime.
Try to find the source of the leak - if possible, isolate by closing isolation or service valves.
Shut the valve by closing the thermostat on the top of the valve to '0' or the frost setting.
If you don't have a thermostatic valve (or TRV as they are known), take the white cap off the valve and close it with a set of pliers.
I can replace valves quickly and without mess.
Depending on the type of system, valves can be removed, inspected and replaced without having to drain your system, saving you time & money.
Wet Rooms are waterproofe, or 'tanked' rooms usually with a walk in shower.
The wet room itself becomes the shower enclosure, with a shower drain inset into a gently sloped floor in place of a conventional shower tray.
Tanking is a waterproofing procedure carried out in bathrooms, wet rooms, shower rooms, which protects the building against moisture migration and leaks (steam, shower spray, etc).
Without adequate waterproofing, water & other forms of moisture can migrate into the building structure over time causing mould growth, rot, and in some cases resulting in structural damage.
The kitchen work triangle is a model that was developed in the 1940s to address the efficiency of the kitchen space between the major work centers: Cooking, Preparation (sink/dishwasher) and Food Storage (refrigerator).
It was designed to maximize the efficiency of a one-cook kitchen that stemmed from Taylorist principles that had to do with time-motion studies from around the turn of the century.
The University of Illinois School of Architecture developed the work triangle to emphasize cost reduction by standardising construction.
